第２章 予兆
ある町の夕暮れ。それは、いつもと変わらない、どこにでもある退屈な一日の終わりのはずだった。
正義感が強く聡明なジョンと、その恋人カレンは、リビングのソファーで穏やかな時間を過ごしていた。 何気なくジョンがリモコンを操作し、テレビをつける。画面には、髪をワックスで固めたニュースキャスターが映り、世間の出来事を淡々と読み上げていた。
しかし、人一倍危機意識の強いふたりは、ある奇妙な報道に釘付けになる。
「――続いてのニュースです。最近、近隣地域で原因不明の『連続失踪事件』が相次いでいます。しかし警察当局はこれを、よくある家出や浮世の流動的な現象に過ぎないと一蹴しており……」
深刻な事態であるはずなのに、ニュースはそれを大したことではないように切り捨て、何事もなかったかのように機械的な天気予報へと切り替わった。 不気味な違和感だけが部屋に取り残される。ジョンとカレンの胸に、冷たい胸騒ぎが走った。

それからもしばらくの間、町は不気味なほど平凡で、退屈な日々が続いていた。 だが、その静寂は、ある日突然、悲鳴とともに破られることになる。
「ジョンお兄ちゃん！！ カレンお姉ちゃん！！」
ふたりがいつも可愛がっている近所の幼い兄妹、トニーとアニーが泣き叫びながら家に飛び込んできたのだ。 ふたりの身体はガタガタと激しく震え、顔からは完全に血の気が引いている。あまりの恐怖に呼吸を乱しながら、やっとの思いで声を振り絞った。
「大きなトカゲが……化け物が……人間を捕まえて、連れていっちゃったんだ！！」
子供たちの青ざめた表情と、ただごとではない怯え方。ジョンとカレンは、背筋が凍るような戦慄を覚えた。 「一体どこでそれを見たんだ？ 何があった？」 必死に詳細を聞き出そうとするが、子供たちはすっかりパニックに陥り、ただお互いに抱き合って泣きじゃくることしかできなかった。
迫り来る未知の脅威。それが、恐ろしい事件の「予兆」だということに、ふたりはまだ気づいていなかった――。
恐怖の呪縛からようやく逃れつつあったトニーとアニーは、ぽつり、ぽつりと語り始めた。 「ジョン兄ちゃん……カレン姉ちゃん……」 「俺たち、友達とかくれんぼをしてたんだ。絶対に見つからないように、大木が深く生い茂る山の奥深くに隠れてた」
「……その時、10人ほどの大人たちが、固まって何かを話しながら歩いてきたんだ」 二人は再び激しく震え出したが、それでも恐怖をねじ伏せるようにして言葉を紡いだ。
「……突然、巨大な緑のトカゲが現れて、その人たちを掴んだかと思ったら、一瞬で消え去ったんだ」
二人はさらに言葉を交わした。
「ママとお兄ちゃんに話したんだけど、全然信じてくれないの……。それどころか、『嘘つきは泥棒の始まりだよ』って、すごく怒られて。ジョンお兄ちゃんとカレンお姉ちゃんは、私たちのこと、信じてくれる？」
小さな声を震わせる二人の子供たち。ジョンとカレンは、相手が子供であっても大人と同じように、一人の人間として深く尊重していた。
「もちろん信じるよ」
二人は優しく微笑みかけ、怯える子供たちをそっと安心させた。
しかし、子供たちの手を握るジョンとカレンの背中には、冷たい汗が伝っていた。正体のわからない『それ』への激しい恐怖。そして、取り返しのつかないとてつもない事態が、いま、幕を開けようとしている――そんな不吉な予感が、二人の胸を容赦なく締め付けていた。
Chapter 2: Ominous Signs
The sun was setting over the town, bringing what seemed like just another ordinary day to a close.
John, a sharp and deeply principled young man, and his girlfriend, Karen, were sitting on the couch, enjoying a casual conversation. John casually picked up the remote and turned on the TV. A news broadcast was on, featuring a male anchor with neatly gelled hair reporting on various current events. Being highly perceptive and alert to danger, John and Karen found their attention gripped by one particular report.
The anchor mentioned a recent spike in missing person cases, but noted that the police authorities were dismissing it as just a common modern trend. The broadcast then transitioned mechanically into the weather forecast. Despite the brief coverage, John and Karen felt a cold knot of anxiety tightening in their chests over these disappearances.
The town remained quiet, and for a while, the same mundane, boring days dragged on. But one day, an incident occurred that shattered the peace entirely.
Tony and Annie, two young neighborhood children whom John and Karen doted on, came running to them in tears. Trembling uncontrollably, they managed to squeeze out the terrifying words:
“A giant lizard… it was carrying a human away!”
Seeing the children’s pale, horror-stricken faces, John and Karen knew instantly that something was terribly wrong. They desperately tried to ask for more details, but the children were so utterly traumatized that they could do nothing but sob in fear.
Slowly breaking free from the grip of terror, Tony and Annie finally broke their silence. “John… Karen…” “We were playing hide-and-seek with our friends. We went deep into the mountains, hiding where the trees grow thickest, so no one could find us.”
“…Then, about ten grown-ups passed by, whispering among themselves in a tight group.” The trembling returned, shaking them to the core, but they forced down the fear and kept speaking.
“…Suddenly, these massive green lizards materialized. They snatched the people, and in a blink of an eye… they were gone.”

Yet, underneath their gentle smiles, a sharp terror toward the unknown pierced through John and Karen. A grim premonition gripped them—a feeling that something truly monstrous was about to begin.
Capítulo 2: Presagios

Acto seguido, la transmisión pasó mecánicamente al pronóstico del tiempo. A pesar de la brevedad del reporte, John y Karen sintieron un presentimiento sombrío y un frío nudo en el pecho debido a esas desapariciones.
El pueblo siguió tranquilo, y por un tiempo, continuaron los mismos días monótonos y aburridos. Pero un día, ocurrió un incidente que desató el caos por completo.
Tony y Annie, dos niños pequeños del vecindario a quienes John y Karen querían mucho, llegaron corriendo y llorando desconsoladamente. Temblando de pies a cabeza, apenas lograron articular unas palabras aterrorizadas:
“¡Un lagarto gigante… se llevaba a una persona!”
Al ver los rostros pálidos y desencajados de los niños, John y Karen supieron de inmediato que algo andaba muy mal. Intentaron desesperadamente pedirles más detalles, pero los pequeños estaban tan completamente traumatizados que no hacían más que sollozar de miedo.

—…Entonces, unos lagartos verdes descomunales aparecieron de la nada. Atraparon a los adultos y, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos… se esfumaron.
Siguieron hablando.
—Se lo contamos a mamá y a nuestro hermano mayor, pero no nos creyeron para nada… —sollozaron los niños—. Al contrario, se enfurecieron y nos dijeron que mentir es el primer paso para robar. John, Karen… ¿ustedes sí nos creen?
John y Karen trataban a los niños con el mismo respeto que a los adultos.
—Por supuesto que les creemos —dijeron con dulzura, calmando y dando seguridad a los dos pequeños.
Sin embargo, detrás de sus sonrisas amables, un miedo atroz hacia lo desconocido se apoderó de John y Karen. Un presentimiento sombrío los invadió: la terrible certeza de que algo verdaderamente descomunal estaba a punto de comenzar.
