Chapter 1: Ominous Shadows

The morning sun broke over a quiet, unsuspecting town. A woman was enjoying a peaceful stroll with her dog when, without warning, the air itself began to warp. A sickening ripple bent the light, revealing a fleeting glimpse of something green and writhing. In the blink of an eye, the woman, her dog, and the emerald anomaly vanished into thin air, leaving behind nothing but an eerie silence.

Meanwhile, in a park across a neighboring town, Chris, a homeless man, crouched in the shadows of the thickets. He held his breath, watching a young couple whispering sweet nothings on a bench. Suddenly, the space around them violently distorted. A grotesque, green entity materialized out of nothingness. Terrified, Chris’s mind raced as he forced himself to process the horror before him: “It’s a human body… but that head… it’s a lizard. No, a snake.” A split second later, the couple and the unspeakable creature evaporated. Only the empty bench remained. Chris was left alone, trembling uncontrollably in the dark.

For what felt like eternity, fear paralyzed him. His body shook violently, his mind a chaotic blur of panic. But as the stark reality sank in—that he had just witnessed a reptilian humanoid—a primal instinct kicked in. The park was his home. If they could strike here, he would be next. Spurred by sheer survival instinct, he finally forced his trembling legs to move, stumbling out of the park and heading toward the police station.

Chris dragged his feet and finally arrived at the nearest police station. As the automatic doors slid open and he stepped into the air-conditioned building, he felt a momentary sense of relief from the heat. However, that brief comfort was instantly shattered.

The police officers, who were supposed to uphold the law and protect citizens, looked at Chris with blatant disgust. It was true that Chris was currently a homeless man who hadn’t bathed in days. A foul, pungent odor drifted from his tattered clothes—a stench he was well aware of himself. The officers who passed by deliberately covered their noses and glared at him with resentment.

He walked up to the reception desk and spoke to the officer behind the acrylic barrier. “Excuse me… I just saw something terrible…”

The moment the officer saw Chris, his face contorted in sheer annoyance. Before Chris could even explain, the officer cut him off coldly. “Hey, this isn’t a place for filthy, stinky homeless people to come and cool off. If you don’t have real business here, get out right now.”

Normally, Chris would have just looked down and walked away. But the horrifying scene he had just witnessed in the park refused to leave his mind. Trembling violently from fear, Chris desperately pleaded with the officer.

“No, you don’t understand! I really saw a monster! It was wearing clothes, and its body shape looked like a normal human. But it wasn’t! Its skin color and its face were completely like a lizard or a snake! It was a hideous reptilian monster! It snatched a young man and woman in the park and vanished with them in the blink of an eye. You have to believe me!”

Chris’s desperate cries echoed through the quiet station. However, what appeared in the officer’s eyes was not sympathy, but deep contempt and irritation. The officer slammed his hand on the desk, stood up, and hurled insults at Chris.

“You piece of junk homeless piece of trash! Are you on drugs or hallucinating? Stop screaming your nonsense here! Or what, are you telling me you kidnapped that couple for ransom? If this is a sick joke, you better stop now. Otherwise, get the hell out of here, we’re busy! Don’t ever come back!”

Crushed by the roaring voice and the icy stares from everyone around him, Chris was completely broken. It was useless to say anything more. The institution that was supposed to protect the world would never listen to someone like him.

With his shoulders slumped, Chris left the police station with heavy steps. The humid outside air wrapped around him once again. He couldn’t go back to that dangerous park where the terrifying monster lurked. Trembling with fear, he headed toward the district of high-rise buildings as darkness began to fall. Deep within the cold concrete gaps, in the darkness of the alleyways where no light could reach, hiding was the only thing Chris could do.
